ACTIVITY vs RESULTS
Are your activities getting you the ultimate results that you want?
We joined this networking group to become busier. We want more work. We want more referrals. Every once in a while, we’ve seen a member say, “I am too busy to continue networking.” Somehow they have overshot the right amount of busy-ness.
In essence, your activities have to change as you become busier because you have to figure out a way to get more results out of a shorter amount of time. We all have a certain number of hours in the day. It is how we apply that time. If you are an entrepreneur and you are busy and are becoming busier, you have to do something like hire people, delegate or do things to have other individuals step in and assist because we are all busy. The question is are we productive?
Here is an analogy:
Imagine being on a paddleboard in the middle of a lake safely with no boats coming. Safely floating in the middle of the lake. You close your eyes and you start paddling in the direction that you think you are paddling. Then the wind starts blowing, there is a little bit of a current, and maybe a boat comes by. You’re still paddling exactly the way you were but you can end up going in a completely different direction if you’re not paying attention to your activity. If you continue to do the same thing, you’re probably going to get knocked over at some point.
It’s just a matter of changing the activity or changing the quality of the activity that you are going to do. For example:
- When you meet somebody for the first time and you are just getting to know them, you really have to give them time and see where the conversation goes. You are trying to figure out do we have things in common? That first 1-2-1 tends to be one that is a little more meandering in the tell me about your kids, tell me about your this, tell me about your that. It is a little more meandering and you just kind of have to give it a little bit more time.
- If you know that person really, really well, your next 1-2-1 can literally be like 15-30 minutes. “Here are the deals that I am working on right now. Do you know anybody who you could help connect me to?” The 1-2-1 is the same in activity but they look very very different because I already know you. You already know me. We already hang out. 1-2-1’s are not for hanging out. It is for us to quickly get some strategic business done. This is just one example of how you can change the way that you do the activity to get the results.
